Note: Georgia regulators are on the cusp of approving an unnecessary mine on the boundary of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. a desperately needed federal wildlife sanctuary. Following a 60 day public comment period, ending April 9, the final permits could be issued, and Twin Pines Minerals could begin operations, removing topsoil, digging out the sand pits, separating the titanium from the sand and then returning sand and soil to some approximation of their original place. To manage all this, Twin Pines would need to pump 1.4 million gallons of groundwater a day from the aquifer that serves the Okefenokee. Building a mine on the edge of the Okefenokee would rob nearby Georgians of safe drinking water, rob wild neighbors of one of the few truly wild places left and rob the world of an ecological treasure.
